Conex® Wood Extruder CWE 500-2 for Rigid WPC Panels

presentation in Principia Partners WPC-conference and table top show in Baltimore, USA

Conenor and Maillefer have used their new cast die design together with 2-rotor Conex Wood Extruder CWE 500-2 to produce flat multilayer panels in width of 600 mm (24 in.) and presented this new technology at the Wood-Plastic Composites 2006 conference held in September in Baltimore, MD, USA sponsored by Principia Partners.

Previous studies in the US done on WPC-panels made by conventional compression techniques and using wood flour at relatively low contents show inferior performance in rigidity and thermal stability vs. wood panels like plywood, OSB and others. Conenor developed advanced technique using multiple material layers, high wood content at levels 70%, long fibre aspect ratio and fibre cross-orintation and efficient distributive mixing of all WPC-formulation components without inducing excess shear heat is to overcome the reasons why WPC-panels could not gain equal strenght performance to compete with the wood panels existing in the market while offering superior moisture absorption performance.

A vital factor in WPC-panels is to reduce their weight i.e. material density from standard WPC-products like decking boards. There are two means for weight reduction; hollow boards with fingered dies or foam core sandwich structures which both are possible with CWE-technique. Conenor preferred solution is foam core sandwich structures of two material formulations where the core is manufactured in reduced densities down to 0,5 g/cm3 of a WPC-formulation say 50/50 wood-plastic inside the panel solid surfaces in another WPC-formulation containing higher wood content in levels of 70%. An additional benefit in these new WPC-panels is the fact that also the sides of the panels are covered with the same moisture resistant WPC-material as the top and bottom - and without seams !
